(excerpt from Sausage Software) While we're on the topic of Internet artwork, here are some guidelines on what you can and can't do:- Always check to determine what any site's position is on use, alteration and reproduction. It's your responsibility to find out, so always check with the site's administrator.
- In general, you won't be breaching an owner's Copyright is you take an image and then substantially alter or manipulate it, essentially creating your own art from theirs.
- Acknowledging that you are using materials that are someone else's Copyright is not in itself a defense! Equally, adding 'used without permission' does not make your breach of copyright any less illegal. Get permission!
- If you are using the images for a profit making enterprise, there may be different guidelines for your usage.
- In short, ALWAYS check to see if your specific use is within the permitted uses specified by the Copyright Holder. If permission is not automatically granted, write to them and ask - often a request will be answered with a yes!
- If all the above fails to work for you, learn some basic graphics skills and start adapting or creating your own icons. It's not as hard as it might seem...
